Why is Dropbox required for Labeling and Homescreen editing?

I would love to use the labeling and homescreen editing capability. But I am concerned about logging in to any external accounts and associate my bitcoin activity with them. Before I try using this, can anyone explain exactly what happens with Dropbox, and why it is needed?
