How so you find new places?

Hi, I recently moved here and I'm having a hard time finding new good places to eat and do activities.

In Italy we had TripAdvisor as our go-to website or app to find new spots, but here it doesn't look like it's widely used.

That said, do you have any recommendations on apps or websites for finding new places? I've heard of foursquare and Yelp, is one of those two more popular than the other (i.e. up to date recommendations, etc)?
