Starting a new campaign. Setting is a D&D friendly earth

Hey guys. I'm dming a new campaign soon and my players and I love world culture. We decided that a modified earth would be a really interesting campaign setting. Any ideas for D&D themes or creatures that could replace or add to historical empires or events. Examples...Japan could have an actual dragon emperor and be the home of a Dragonborn nation.
