Trying vegan/veg question: Does it count if you are 99% vegan?

Discussion

For example, I just posted about the ice cream and I've posted a bit in here. I'm not vegan, but eventually it would be wonderful to get there.

I don't have problems turning down meat, and I love soy milk and I'm good with passing up most else. But I adore sushi, and this one chocolate shop in Brevard with the most amazing lavendar truffled. And egg nog with captain's at Christmas with my in-laws.

Would it count if I was 99% vegan, at home and out and about, but I had those things once a year?

Aside: I'll be at my first family gathering tomorrow, the more meat-heavy side of the family. Wish me luck. FIL has a killer ham and bean soup, which I know I could effectively duplicate as the ham is just the bone and the salt, not much meat. But it will be so so so hard to turn down these traditional and almost ritualistic dishes for the first time...
