Playing Japanese DVDs on an American PS2?

Is there a way to play Japanese DVDs on an American PS2? I know there's hacks for playing NTSC DVDs on PAL systems, and you can't play PAL DVDs on an NTSC system. But Japanese DVDs are NTSC, so there shouldn't be an issue there.
