Another new monk thread!

Hey there, new player here! I played classic some when I was ten or so, otherwise I'm pretty new to eq. I read a lot of stuff before making an all Stam iksar monk, but I'm having trouble even killing whites. I saved spider silk and traded my stacks for a magic shirt, and someone gave me a survival staff. Is the survival staff better than my fists? I've been doing the curscale armor quest to get hear but it doesn't seem to help much. What am I doing wrong?
