What are your thoughts on speaking to people you pass by day to day?

I currently live in a relatively big complex. When I am walking to get my mail or taking out the trash and I pass by someone I always say hello, one way or another. However, I've noticed lately that most people just smile and nod and some just flat out ignore me. I suppose some people just want to be left alone but I always say hello when someone says it first.

Just curious to see how many people like saying 'hello' to others. :)
