Why did the Japanese imperial government decide to open hostilities with the United States in December 1941?
Curious as to why did they chose to do so in such a dramatic, indeed “infamous” manner? Was the attack rational? Was it necessary? Given the progress of the diplomacy between Japan and the United States in the summer and fall of 1941, is there any way the event could have been avoided?
EDIT: Thanks for the answers guys!
