Hit by a car: want to claim insurance, but unsure how.

A couple of weeks back I was crossing a road at a green walk sign and was hit by a car. I hit my head hard and an ambulance was called and I went to hospital. The police then stayed around to take information.

I now want to claim compensation but am unsure exactly what to do?

I'm an student from England studying a year abroad in Vermont so am completely unaware of what I would do to get the drivers insurance details. As of yet I've only been told to report the accident to the DMV.

Could anyone give me some details of the next steps that I have to take?
