Gym owners

Is it worth it opening up a gym? Most gyms I have seen average 20-30 students if they are lucky. Even at 100$ each that barely covers rent in someplace like California. Is it a worthy goal or should I continue my education? I want to pursue my passion but at the same time I don't see how it's possible to make a good living as a gym owner.
