Selling information to advertisers?

I switched to DDG a few weeks ago, and have liked it a lot so far. However, I recently turned my adblock off while on facebook and was dismayed to see ads directly based on my recent searches (specifically, sticker versions of an image I downloaded from DDG image search). Was I wrong in thinking using this search engine would protect me from things like this?
