Just started keto; down 10 lbs in 3 weeks! [long post, TL;DR inside]
TL;DR - 5'3" / female, started keto the beginning of February at 148 lbs, now currently 139 and counting down each day!
Hi guys! Long time lurker of r/keto, first time poster. I started keto roughly a month ago after struggling with carrying around an extra 40 pounds for the last 2 years and thought I would share how it's been working for me so far!
First, some background on myself: I'm 5'3", female, very sedentary, and formerly thin (weighing 110 lbs for a good portion of my life). Unfortunately, I struggle with severe depression and have been on a wide array of various antidepressants and antianxiety meds for the last four years, which caused my weight to balloon up to 160 and kind of hang there for a long while.
Last year, I went off all my meds (with medical supervision) but my weight stayed put. After finally having enough and feeling miserable for so long, I started a very relaxed version of keto (where I don't track my calories or really any of my macros, save for carb intake which is limited to ~20 g net carbs per day) around the beginning of February.
When I started, I was weighing in at around 148-150 lbs (it fluctuated). Today I'm happy to report that I'm weighing in at 139 lbs, meaning I've lost around 10 pounds in just 3 weeks! I was pretty skeptical of keto for the longest time, because my brain could not accept the idea of a high fat diet leading to weight loss (despite knowing the science behind the diet), but I'm so happy I decided to take the plunge and try it anyway.
I did suffer from the keto flu for the first 3 or 4 days, but after it passed, I seemed to have more energy, less appetite, and more motivation to keep on keeping on with keto. I typically eat a couple of meals per day (I've never been able to eat more than two meals per day my entire life, even at my heaviest) and closely monitor my carb intake, but take a more relaxed stance on calories and fat and indulge more in those foods.
So that's my progress so far! I can't believe keto is as effective as it has been for me. My ultimate goal is to lose around 25 more pounds, getting back down to 115. I'm starting a new workout regime tomorrow that will hopefully help me get closer to my goal a little quicker. Once I'm down to my goal weight, I'll be sure to post an update with pics.
Without the r/keto community sharing various progress updates and tips, I would still be stuck at 160, feeling miserable, lethargic, and just plain fat. Thank you to everyone who is candid about their experiences with keto, and good luck with all of your respective keto goals!
