Plants vs. Zombies: Garden Warfare 1

So with the second GvZ: GW game coming out in a few days, I'm picking this game up for way cheaper (obviously) than the new game. Is the player base still active and/or should I just save my time and money for when the second game drops in price? I adored the new game's open beta so I'm hoping I can get my feet wet with this one first.
