How many of you had adults who knew about your neglect or abuse and did nothing?
I am older, so there wasn't mandated reporting when I grew up.
Yet I have often wondered why no one said anything. I was often dirty, my clothes torn, my hair knotted, unbrushed teeth, no schools supplies, no lunches many times -- under the watchful eyes of the nuns. No one said a word. I weighed 80 pounds in High School.
I did have one teacher in 6th Grade who was very curious as to why I was going to the shittiest school in the city and was reading as the 12th grade level. He forbid me to come to school without glasses, my Nmom handed me my sister's and told me to lie. Teacher knew I still couldn't see. I didn't even do class assignments because they were childish. He talked to me about my home life, but I didn't really tell him anything other than I had a lot of chores and my parents ignored me. He knew something was wrong. He did not pursue it.
Then there was my 7th Grade teacher who talked to my Nmom about my standardized testing and wanted her to put me in a gifted school. She told him she didn't want to make GCsis feel bad. That teacher KNEW my Nmom was fucked up, but did nothing. He did let me spend the rest of the year reading instead of class work.
Senior teacher KNEW my parents kicked me out of the house at 16. She did nothing.
Why? Why wasn't I valued enough to protect and defend?
