Entering phase 3 of potential tv deal - let's talk numbers
Hello all,
So I'm hoping to gain some insight from this community. I've entered into talks with a production company who is now in the "selling me" phase. Together we've created a sizzle reel and they've already targeted a network that we're hoping wants to work with me.
Given that... and I realize I may be jumping the gun a bit because this could all still fall apart rather easily, what should I do in terms of numbers? Money, I mean. What's the median, the starting out, the average, all that for a new show (but with a known production company) on a network that could easily support the format?
I know I say I may be jumping the gun but I don't entirely think I am. I feel that given the path this is leading I need to think these things out and plan them thoroughly. This is a natural part of that path.
I've yielded little results, I feel, using Google.
The issue I'm having determining something on my own is my day job. I make decent enough money and there's no guarantee that the show will last beyond 1 season if it gets picked up at all. So I'm trying to decide at what level does my commitment to this begin and end. How much will they work with me on a time frame and availability, how committed do they want me to this project? Because I feel if I can't make at least 2 years worth of my current salary in one season with this potential program then they need to be willing to work with me on the time frame and availability (weekends) until we both know if it'll go into more seasons. Otherwise it won't be worth it vs my current salary.
Legally speaking I've really said all I can about the contract and deal. So I hope this will suffice.
p.s. The reason I don't just go ahead and discuss this with them is because it's still very early. Phase 3 is my own wording because this is the 3rd "big" hurdle I've had to overcome. I feel like prematurely discussing this with them could be a huge turn off despite my positive relationship with them.
