So, what should I be spending my energy on early on?

Should I just be using it exclusively on gathering materials while grinding? Or should I be investing energy into nodes?

On a separate note, what do you get from leveling up nodes? Am I correct in assuming I should level up the major city nodes with energy first right? Do all the other nodes get benefit if the city node is leveled up?
