Just a question about elements

When using an element that a monster is weak against, and I doing more or less damage than I would be doing if I didn't have the element at all?

For example, if I had an OP relic sns with max raw and all that jazz with [value] dragon Atk, and I want to use this all the time, would it HURT me to use it on a monster that isn't weak/is resistant to that element?

I know it would be sub-optimal and I would probably just be better off using a sword that matches the monster, but I was curious and can't get the question off my head.
