How do you turn on the Steam Link with the Steam Controller?

Hitting the Steam button to turn the controller on does nothing to start the Steam Link. I have to power on the Link by plugging the power in and out every time I'm first starting it up. This is very frustrating, I'm sure I'm doing something wrong?
