A tale of race weight

So here I was, an aspiring juniors racer in my senior year of Highschool. I'm 6'2, and if left to my own devices, my body naturally tops out at around 154 pounds (70 KG on the dot). So when race season came about, after reading about the amazing capabilities of Froome and Andy Schleck, I became enthralled with the idea of losing a fair amount of weight to get the lean, tour look. I eventually decided that 148 was my race weight, and eventually achieved it. but let me tell you: I hated every bit getting there, training rides were cut early, and I was pretty irritable. Flash forward to first season as a collegiate racer, I have decided to bulk up instead, now up to 156 pounds, around 71 KG. And let me tell you: FANTASTIC idea. I'm putting out much more wattage than before (20 min FTP went from 4.6 w/kg to 5 even) and I can sustain harder efforts for longer, longer into rides (so I fatigue later). I don't watch calories, I don't hate myself after indulging, and my sprinting has improved ten fold. I bulked up responsibly- more lean protein, more healthy fats- and I am much happier because of it. Moral of the story: don't stress race weight, you may even think your race weight is lighter than what it needs to be.
