Trying to figure out how to do a text effect in AE

It's used all the time for logos and for the life of me I can't think of a single example. Basically there are 2 or more letters that make up the abbreviated brand name, and then the full words expand from those letters horizontally from left to right. Anyone know what I'm talking about?
