Help with a complicated effect

I'm working on ideas for a school project. The idea involves some reality rule-breaking. One of the characters draws something and enters it and the other character runs right into it. It's a slight variation of the Roadrunner & Coyote joke. Is there a practical camera trick to this or would this rely heavily on a green screen technique?
