Genre fiction suggestions that are not Sci-Fi, Fantasy, or Horror?

I read a fair amount of Sci-Fi, Fantasy and Horror but almost no Historical Fiction, Westerns, or, dare I mention, Romance. I've watched Romantic Comedies and by and large, find the genre insipid and cutesy rather than funny and romantic. I want them to be good they just usually don't appeal. But if there's something you think transcends the usual muck, by all means let me know. I'd like to expand my reading in all area's. Thanks.
