Do mods affect Multiplayer?

I have many visual mods (accesories for my soldiers) installed, and though I made sure my customized multiplayer squad didn't wear any of them; despite this, I can never find an opponent in multiplayer. Are my other mods (Like the numeric health display and that "Ayy Lmao" text replacer) affecting my ability to get into multiplayer matches? Or is matchmaking that bad/multiplayer that dead?
