Am I using Likes and Browsing wrong?

What is "The Way" for a man to use Likes these days? Do you go through Quickmatch and like people there before contacting them? Or wait until you actually have a few messages go back and forth?

I've been ignoring Quickmatch and mostly going through Browse matches and "You might like" links to find profiles, and Liking them after a couple message go through. So... I don't use Likes much.
