Purchase of used AppleTV 3 (xpost AppleTV)

I'm considering purchase of a used AppleTV 3rd generation. I know that the recent models of iPhones can be locked to an itunes account, making purchase of one risky if it's locked and the password isn't available. Is it the same risk for the 3rd Gen of the TV device, or is this something I can reset and use as my own? I'll add that I have no reason to believe the seller isn't the legitimate owner of the device, but nonetheless I don't want to get burned. Selling price is just over half of new.
