Where do you get inspiration for your maps?

I really want to make a good build in Terraria, but I feel like, without some kind of guide to go by, or a vision before hand, it's just slapping a bunch of blocks together. Where do you guys go for inspiration? Or what's your process for building some of these awesome maps you have? Is it just trial and error, or do you use source material for reference?
