How my hacking spree pushed away all my closest friends. [Long]

The Serial Hacker

Synopsis: This is the story of how I managed to mess up my middle school and high-school relationships because I was bored.. Right.. So this happened way, way back in seventh grade when everyone was using MSN but no one really knew about internet security. At the time I thought of myself as some sort of computer whiz and that's what most my friends thought of me.

So we were in computer class and I was talking to this girl, let’s call her Nora, I liked and she was gossiping about her fake friend, Jenny, and somehow we decided to hack her account. Obviously, knowing i'd do anything to please her she asks me to do it.

We gather around one computer with her other friend, let's call her Moony, and use the secret question recovery method. (i know this isn't really hacking but we were 11)

The question was ''Name of your childhood bestfriend'' and now since Moony and Nora were ''friends'' with Jenny they knew the answer. So we get in, delete all her friends from the list and log out.

A couple days later she finds out and confront us about it, I deny it, and pretend nothing happened. The girls have their catfight and I stay out of it...but it doesn't end there... Oh I wish it did.

Now something took hold of me and this became some sort addiction. I'd use someone's email, answer the secret question and proceed to snoop around and troll.

I didn't really hate anyone, honestly, but I was just a bored kid who thought he was smart.

I choose my next target.... Moony's boyfriend.

Answered the secret question ''Who is your favorite teacher'' - we basically all had the same favorite teacher - Mr. Brooks. I knew it right away. Logged in but this time I don't delete his contacts..

I go onto his Facebook and reset his password... then snoop around commenting on random pictures for some idiotic reason I commented on my cousins post as Moony's boyfriend!

So he confronts me about it and I deny it.. (notice the trend)

That's it? It's not too bad right? Nope. I move on to my next victim...

Moony! Still can't explain it..

So I log on, repeat the same steps and then log onto her Facebook but I stop myself there.. a couple days later I create a fake MSN account and now this is where it gets messed up. I start adding friends and pretend to be Moony..

I was quite a close friend so I know a lot about her but that doesn't help me.. it makes it even worse. Moony and her friends finds out and they start a group chat with me in it and start attacking me.. The really messed up part about it is that they added me, the REAL me to help them figure it out.. because you know i'm the ''computer'' whiz.

At the time I wasn’t feeling guilty.. No, this was fun! I was playing both cop and robber and no one knew. I get sucked in and keep it going but I get backed up and they start bringing up names and so the real me jumps in and solves the mystery! Now.. the only flaw was that it was made up and it involved hurting even more people than I already was..

I come up with the perfect story - too perfect. I blame it on Melanie. Melanie liked Moony's boyfriend (everyone know that) and so she was jealous and her friend, Billy, who is also good with computers (I know that because he's also my friend) to do all the hacking for her. They confront her about it and she denies it and gets pissed.. Now this is the part I really, really regret. Before I can go through with it you need to a little about me and my best friend Joseph.

Flashback to first day of preschool. I walk in late, never got the hang of this punctuality business, I blame my Dad. The teacher asks me to sit next to her son, Joseph, who would grow up to be my best friend and biggest competitor.

First couple of years was all about figuring each other out, we were both really sporty and so that's where it started. P.E wasn't about any of the others, it was about me and him. They would never put us in the same team and we didn't mind, usually. I liked playing against him. Primary school changes us a bit and we turn it into a 'You and I against the world' thing. We did everything together, we had the same friends, our families became really good friends. He was the first guy I tell about Nora and he helped me hook up with her in fifth grade. What could go wrong right? I got the girl of my dreams, have a great best-friend, I was good at sports, I was getting average grades. Sixth grade comes and what happens.. I hit fucking puberty.

Who the hell hits puberty at 10 years old? Now this was brilliant for me, all of a sudden I'm wrecking Joseph in sports, I get made captain of football, basketball, and volleyball! I was playing with the 8th graders and 7th graders because none of my friend made it. Right now that just sounds like a dream but I promise you it's true...

All of a sudden a small part of me fades. Joseph starts to grow distant. That fire we had early on was growing dimmer. He was no longer my competitor, and at some point he was no longer my best friend...He finds a new friend group and I find another one. We'd have kick-abouts every once in a while but it wasn't the same. Not with me and him.

Now back to the hacking spree in seventh grade.

So Melanie denies their accusations and I log back on to the fake messenger and we start attacking fake Moony again(me). This time I decide to prove it with my hacking skills. I threaten to hack into the account and use the ip address to track her down... I couldn't do that but they didn't know.

I pretend to do it but I didn't know where Billy or Melanie lived... there was one person who I knew their location and their phone number..

''Guys! I hacked into it and holy shit the password is 02936475*, that's Josephs home number!'' Fuck. I fucked up. but I don't stop..no I suggest we add him to the group chat and figure it out.

Then to cover up both my ass and his I say ''but it can't be him because he's already online'' but they don't buy it. Everyone knew Joseph and everyone liked him. There's not a single person who meets him and hates him. He's one of the nicest and friendliest person i've ever known and he is...was my best friend.

Now this where I realize I fucked up big time. Joseph would NEVER do anything like this and the only that could've been his phone number is if I made it up. They knew. I knew they knew so I panic, log out and delete the account. Too late. The damage is done.

They didn't even confront me about it, they just knew, I could feel it for the rest of middle school life. I think that's the worst part about it. I had to hold it in, losing my best friends Moony and Joseph and my girl Nora.. without confronting me about it. Watching them all grow closer and happy. Until now I've never called anyone my best friend. Wouldn't dare. I don't deserve one.

For the next few years I put it all behind me and moved on, still guilty but I just kept going, and doing what I could - getting lost in books, video games, but never making any close friends after that. Until high school sophomore year.. that is however a story for another time - if this shows some interest.

I'll answer any questions you might have.
