How do Malaysians respond to bank errors that occurred in their favour?

Culture

Scenario:

You went to the ATM, and requested for RM 100 with a receipt. You're surprised to find out that you got RM 10,000 instead, with the receipt saying that it is only RM 100.

When you got home, you checked your account online and found out, sure enough, your account was only withdrawn with only RM 100.

Because you don't want to make yourself to look like a criminal or something, you've decided to put the money in a safe place, fully expecting for the bank to quickly spot the mistake and ask for the money back.

1 year passed. Nobody called. Nobody came to back to ask for the RM 10,000.

Would you have kept the money? Or would you have considered it as stealing?

Why did you say as such?

Shown below are the common justification by people who have chose to take the money:

  1. I did not deliberately take RM 10,000 from the ATM, it has been given to me.

  2. I did not take from other people, so technically I did not rob the money from other people's account.

  3. The bank will probably think this was a drop in the ocean for them, and anyway, they would be insured against such eventualities.

  4. It's the bank's fault that they had lost the money -- they should have safer systems.

  5. This wasn't theft. It's just the biggest stroke of luck.
