External Hard Drive/ connecting to external USB hub

Ladies and Gentlemen, I have an issue that I need help resolving.

I have an Amazon basics external usb 3.0 hub I connect to my laptop. It came with an AC power adapter but I never plugged it in. I use it to mainly connect an external hard drive I use and to charge phones sometimes. I decided to try using it with the power supply and see if it would charge my phone faster. I didn't know if it would be ok to plug my drive into it if the hub was powered. I tried it and the drive made a weird noise so I quickly disconnected it. I plugged it in again without the power and it showed up on the computer, but I tried running a backup program and it wouldn't complete the backup. Now when I plug it in the drive comes on but It won't show up on my desktop. Did I ruin the drive?
