Controlling an Alesis SR-16

Is it possible to control an Alesis SR-16 with another controller? I have specific reasons for using the sounds on the SR-16 for live performances but the pads on it are kind of hard on the fingers. Anytime I look up drum controllers, I find controllers that are meant to be plugged into a computer to control software via USB but I'm wondering if there's a self-powered controller that I can use to control my SR-16. Maybe something like the Korg Nanopad or similar but standalone? Or maybe I'm chasing a ghost... Anyway, I appreciate any help.

EDIT: I also recently purchased an SR-18 and I figured out how to control the SR-16 with it last night. Ironically though, the SR-18 pads are even worse than the SR-16 :( Way less responsive...

I also found something called the Arturia Beatstep? Anyone know if I'm on the right track here?
