Did the American Civil War galvanize the idea of the United States as a single entity?
I remember reading or hearing (maybe Ken Burns) that before the civil war it would be more common to say "the United States are..." than "the United States is..." Is there any truth to this? And if so, was it common to have fervant state loyalty throughout the antebellum USA?
