Can a lazy eye develop in adulthood?

Need this for my bio class, the prof was unclear about this. Can a misalignment of eyes develop in adulthood due to a difference in refractive power between the eyes?

From the googling I've done, it seems like it doesn't occur after the "critical" period of visual development is complete.
