I honestly don't understand why people bring up Cultural Appropriation on Halloween
Any other time of the year, I get it- cultural appropriation is looked down on. And there are now a lot of pictures with the statement "My culture is not a costume." But, I really don't understand why we don't allow Halloween- the day of dressing up as something other than yourself as a free pass. In a perfect world, I feel like it would be a neat sort of opportunity to talk to a stranger about the choice of costume, like "Hey, what part of [blank] culture attracted you enough to want to wear a piece of it." and then exchange what you know about the culture (ex. favourite recipes, movies, interesting pieces of history). Or even if they don't really know much about the culture it's an easy way to learn something interesting.
It is the one time of the year where everyone can dress up as everyone to their best ability and then mingle with other people who are doing the same thing. Like, it feels like people only think that people are using a costume to make fun of other people and disregarding that perhaps they just like the culture piece and this is the only time they feel comfortable publicly showing that regard.
This doesn't mean that everything would be rose-coloured though. There are going to be people who are going to use Halloween as a platform to be racist or sexist or just plain offensive. That sucks. It really really sucks that people would do that to this day. But I feel like as a whole, maybe we could be better than the fringe groups that like ruining nice things.
It would be nice to hear what everyone actually thinks about this. Is it a foolish want? Is the post itself horribly offensive? Are the fringe people strong enough to make sure that this never happens?
