Parking ticket in a small village
I moved to Long Island in the summer for grad school and am slowly learning that parking is a very special issue. Where I moved from we didn't have villages... I received a $75 ticket for parking in the only lot in the village of Poquott (for like an hour, to visit a friend with no parking at her house). My professor told me that they actually don't have any authority to make me pay this ticket since it's an unincorporated village and not tied to the county or state. My court date is Wednesday. Can anyone give me information that points to my prof being correct or not?
Edit: Here is what happened at my court date... I walked in (with my s/o as back up since I was nervous as hell) and the prosecutor wasn't there so they just started "court" with the judge. He asked me for an explanation and gave me about 10 seconds to talk. Once I explained that I had no idea it was illegal he said "oh so you are pleading guilty?" and ultimately bumped it down to $40. It was an awful experience but better than paying full price. Thanks for all your insight, everyone.
