Progression in the Hereafter

I'm confused on how one can progress in the hereafter. For example, if there are no poor people, how can one display generosity? If there are no calamities, then how can one display patience? If there are no obligations, then how can one display faithfulness? God willing, if you depart this life and find yourself in the Kingdom of Abhá, I assume that you would be in peace (free from calamities), surrounded by spiritually-rich people, and free from religious obligations. So how can you progress? Unless, of course, that progression in the hereafter is an altogether different reality. Anyways, I just want to get these thoughts out of my system and hear other opinions.
