New Zealand nurses, what are your thoughts on indigenous health?
I'm looking for nurses who have worked/are working in New Zealand, and wonder what your thoughts are on indigenous health and how the Maori people are treated? When I was backpacking in your beautiful countries a few years ago, the impression that I got was that the Maoris were generally well-integrated into society and treated fairly.
I'm a nursing student in Canada and the health of our Aboriginals here are abysmal. Don't have exact numbers but just off the top of my head they have higher rates of diabetes, suicide, unemployment, substance use, HIV, obesity, depression... you get the picture. Resources are often limited and hard to access, especially for those living on reserves.
I just want to compare and see what we can learn from New Zealand and how to improve in the future.
