Why does everybody love Tupac?

I've never understood the appeal - is he a great lyricist? I'm yet to hear the evidence for this. what are his best songs? because I haven't heard a song which makes me understand what most rap fans see in him. somebody: enlighten me. don't get me wrong: I fully understand that he is popular and well-received. I'm merely asking why.
