Books on modern combat/war too help me better understand what I'm reading/seeing here?

I've always thought I had a good understanding of War through my history studies, but I'm realizing now that getting these instant updates through this sub and twitter etc... I have trouble putting whats going on in a more general context, trying to see how a certain event will/might effect things and why it may have been decided upon in the first place without being able to look back on it knowing the whole picture and final results
