[Contest 5] One of only three childhood items I still have

In 1989, Nintendo Power published a ton of articles about the original Gameboy. And then in the fall, we would pick up or get sales flyers from TRU, Sears, etc. I spent the entire fall clipping the little ads for the Gameboy, and a few weeks before xmas I pasted all the clippings I'd saved onto an 8.5x11 piece of paper and stuck it on the fridge. I'd added a bunch of little drawings in the margins between the ads, glitter - you know, the kind of stuff a kid would add just to make sure your parents noticed.

My parents didn't make much.. they were cleaning people at the school I went to, so it was kind of a big thing to ask for.

Anyway, they came through for me and it was a big deal.

Fast forward ten years - my mom had remarried and my siblings+mom were living on the east coast with my less-than-legit stepdad (he was a total shady asshole). While going through some things to clear out, we came across my old Gameboy from that xmas. Kind of in passing I grabbed I took it with me, not thinking too much about it. Cool, old Gameboy, whatever.

Another ten years passed and it ended up in an old box. My mom had since passed away, and I no longer keep in touch with my siblings. My stepdad is who-knows-where, probably still ripping people off and living some kind of shady lifestyle that I want nothing to do with.

I found my old Gameboy again about a year ago while going through things and wanted to bring it back to life. I kind of follow the chiptune scene passively and was really impressed with the mods they do on old DMG-01 systems. I ended up taking the old thing apart and dropping in a backlight, and then soldering up a quick USB power adapter.

I've lost so many things from my childhood. Basically all my old video game systems, toys, momentos, photos.. everything. I don't have much from those days, but I do have this old DMG-01. I still play it every once and a while, and it's cool I don't have to use batteries anymore. Everything has changed so much since then. Final Fantasy Adventure is still amazing. I play FFXIV (shoutouts to Hyperion) and it's nice to think the two are connected in some way, to this day.

Anyway, tl;dr cool old gameboy.
