The great trailor or roofrack debate!

I have recently gone from having an SUV to a mid-sized truck (Chevy Colorado). I really enjoy welding and fabrication work and am trying to decide between buying an old 8ft trailer from my father-in-law and making removable mounts. Or welding together a bed rack that extends over the cab. Anyone have experience with either setups?
