Selecting "Read" option on notification for new messages doesn't actually mark them as read

Greetings. I'm having an issue but don't know if it's an app problem or just a setting I have wrong or something.

When I get a new message/mail the app gives me a notification for it. The notification at the top of the screen shows me the message and gives me the options "read" or "context". When I select "read" the notification disappears but it doesn't actually tell the Reddit site that I've read the message and 30 mins later when Relay checks for new mail it gives me the same notification that I have a new message buy it's the same message I already read. To mark the message as read I have to open the app, go to my inbox, swipe the message left then click "read". Only when I do that do the notifications stop.

Shouldn't clicking "read" on the notification do those extra steps for me? Is this an issue with the app or am I an idiot?

I'm using a Nexus 5X if that's of any help. I checked my notification and permission settings to see if the phone is blocking this somehow but can't find anything related.

Any ideas? Thanks.
