How will Pokemon appear in the game?

I've been wondering how Pokemon will actually appear in the game. I know it's augmented reality, but does that mean Pokemon will actually show up in the real world using your phone's camera? Or will they just appear in a simulated background like in these screenshots? I'm just confused if these are examples, or if they're what the game will actually look like.
