Why do Walt and Skyler have two kids who are 15 years apart? Is there a purpose?

It is unusual, but isn't spoken about in the show.

I can't think of it being necessary to the plot. Holly could have been two years younger than Walt Jr. Things would have played out a little differently, sure. But it isn't like the story needs this unusual situation to function.
