My (44) group of friends have shunned me (some) and I am at a loss.
So basically a few months ago I made a mistake with some friends within a larger group of friends. It's a social community and when I made this mistake, four people just stopped talking to me. I tried to apologize, I really was remorseful for what I did. Another friend who was a mutual friend, I tried to go to her to get her advice on how to fix things, she canceled dinner plans with me saying she didn't want to get involved with the "drama".
After almost three weeks of nothing, I just unfriended all four people. I felt it was manipulative and punitive bullshit. Yes, I made a mistake, but you say, I can't talk to you, but when I am ready, I will. The ignoring me really triggered all kinds of abandonment issues and hurt a LOT, especially since I had just told the person I had hurt that I loved them very much (as a friend). What I did was not intended to hurt anyone. I had just shared something I was told not to within this group of four, not outside and was genuinely concerned for a friend.
So months later, I am speaking to one of them. She said she is really ashamed of how they treated me and was very sorry. She knew I meant well and she has cut off ties with them. But still, the bigger group of friends continue to, one by one, stop talking to me.
This is a group of people I befriended after my divorce and a community I joined where I thought I was welcomed. This has hurt quite a bit and I am really at a loss. Especially when those who refused to speak to me are some of the biggest hypocrites that I have ever met, talking about authenticity, being kind to people, etc. They had no issue talking about my relationship amongst themselves as well. No problem, I had been going to them when I needed to vent about my boyfriend and they urged me to dump him. After this incident, I realized that I had assumed an intimacy that was not there, apologized to the boyfriend for not coming to him and I also no longer discuss my relationship with other people.
I have ended the relationship with the boyfriend. I feel cut off from the people who were supposed to be my friends and at a total loss.
How the hell do you start over at 44? And I examined my behavior and made a pledge to the person I hurt that I would change. I took FULL responsibility for what I did. Since it happened, I have grown so much. I am very proud of that as well. I can see how cliquish and stupid the whole thing is now, but it doesn't make it any less hurtful.
My supposed best friend does return my phone calls ever or answer my calls (She will text me) She won't talk on the phone to me and I never see her. She never makes an effort. I feel like I've just put up with the bare minimum from people and I won't anymore. I know I deserve better.
But again, who has had to make new friends at fucking 44 years old?
tl;dr: Divorced, made lots of new friends, they now shun me because I did something stupid. I am at a loss as to what to do.
