What's up with the fighter jets flying over today?

Been seeing (& especially hearing, damn) what looked like f-15 or f-18 flying in patterns over the sky. Could make out a side profile of the jets because they were low enough. Haven't been able to find any news on it. Exercises? Apparently not news worthy. Ideas?
