How do I keep my ipod from restarting after 15 minutes while trying to restore it?

I have an ipod that needs to be restored but the ipod restarts after 15 minutes. It takes longer than 15 minutes to extract ios and after it finishes it say it can't find the ipod and doesn't restore it.

I've tried putting the ipod back in recovery mode just before ios gets extracted but it still says it couldn't be found. I am unable to use my ipod until it gets restored. So how do I keep it from restarting after 15 minutes? I need it to stay in recovery mode until ios get extracted and installed.

EDIT: I tried it on my laptop. It took four tries but finally got it to restore in the 15 minute window.
