Upgrade Thoughts / Tips [x-post]

First off, here is my PCPartPicker part list of my current build.

Eventually I want to upgrade to a 1440p 144hz monitor so I've begun planning out the upgrade steps I need to do beforehand.

I know a single 970 won't be able to handle modern games at this resolution/fps so that's where I started. Keeping in mind I have a MicroATX case there aren't a lot of options for high end cards. It's basically SLI 970's or an R9 Fury (Nano or X). Now economically the SLI 970s would probably make more sense.

But I am not sure my motherboard would support it. It is the original mobo that came in my pre-built iBuyPower computer that I have slowly upgraded from over 3 years.

So if I upgrade my motherboard it would be a lot more of a hassle because I would have to take everything out and then put it all back in. Which is doable, the only "annoying" part would be my CPU cooler, the H100i. Also I would have to buy new thermal paste (not too bad but just another purchase).

If I upgrade my GPU I fear my CPU would be a bottleneck at it's stock clock (3.4GHz, haven't tried overclocking it because it's scurry, also I dunno if my mobo supports it).

So anyway I'm just looking for thoughts and tips on what I should do regarding upgrading my GPU/CPU.
