Rad tech...life after the degree? Not just pay and jobs prospects question..
So I am thinking about pursuing radiologic technology. It's a 2 year program that I got into at my local junior college. But I'm having hesitations. I already have a 4 year degree I'm not using really and I'm paying off the debt up to my eyeballs for it. I'm incredibly unhappy. I've looked at the BLS, I know what they say I could be making. I've looked at local job boards, and I see a decent amount of jobs. But will this be worth more debt?
I hear horror stories of how people can only find part time work or per diem and other crap like that. I don't want a life of working more than one job, and working only overnights and weekends in a hospital just to make any money. I just don't want that. It isn't worth it to me. Hell, I don't even know what I would actually be making. I know what the BLS and all the websites and literature say the median is. But that doesn't mean I'd be making that. And to put myself further in debt to not make that...yikes.
I'm a little panicked right now. I think I want this, but at what cost?I'm just talking about a regular tech, no mammo, CT, MRI, or additional certifications. That's even more time and money!! I'm just really scared I'll be stuck working crappy jobs, crappy shifts forever.
So I'm just wondering what your experiences have been after becoming rad techs. What has work been like? Pay? Types of jobs? Any information would be helpful at this point.
Also, I'm in the Chicagoland area if that matters
