questions about specialists

I have been trying to better understanding all Nen individualities lately and obviously the specialist is the one i just can't seem to wrap my head around because it is the vaguest of hatsu types. My question would be, are specialist really bound to that individuality like the others or can they use enhancer(or any other type) abilities even if they are on the complete opposite of the chart?

I just can't seem to understand how any of the characters with a specialist tag couldn't in some way fall under another category.
