Sugar Cane Okinawa Write Up
Recently I picked up a pair of the Sugar Cane Okinawa that I've been eyeing for a bit. I haven't seen too many people post details about this pair of jeans so I thought I'd do a little write up on it.
The Okinawa is a more traditional Levi's 1947 501 fit with a higher rise and straight fit with no taper. I sized down to get a slightly slimmer look since I had some extra room in the thighs and would only need to stretch out the waist which stretched within a few days of wearing. These were the one wash version so I didnt bother with doing a presoak. I imagine these will shrink up a bit with a wash.
The fit is what I was looking for in a jean with it's fuller leg (mobility and comfort!) and tapered higher rise (10.5" on a size 29). I never gave higher rises a chance but now that I have a few with higher rises, I'm sold.
Fabric
The Okinawa uses a 14.25oz LHT denim made of 50% cotton and 50% sugar cane. It's got a pretty rough hand and texture with some neps. The weft is a beige/gray color that gives it a darker look overall. It's not exactly a super slubby denim. It's got some nice leg twist on the right leg and after a couple weeks of wear, it's already lightened up so I'm excited to see it age with more wear.
Details
This is where the Okinawa really blows me away. The pocket bags are made of a blue selvedge fabric with a design put into the weave and the back pockets are lined with a lighter weight fabric with a Koi fish print. The back right pocket has a decorative hand stitched design made with a sugar cane thread. The snakeskin back patch is also pretty awesome too.
The other details are what'd you expect a repro style: the rivets and buttons are all branded, 5 pocket button fly, slightly raised belt loops, hidden rivets, and orange and yellow stitching for the construction.
Conclusion
It may not be the slim fit that seems to be the most popular but it's actually pretty versatile if you're looking for a slimmed down straight fit or if you're looking for a more traditional fit. I'm pumped to have this jean in the rotation and look forward to seeing these fade.
